Yvonne Purdie Gay

Yvonne Purdie Gay was a caring mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She entered eternal rest peacefully at her home surrounded by her grandchildren and husband on October 8,2023.

She was born to the late Floyd and Adele Purdie on May 19,1939. She is preceded in death by her daughter Pamela Purdie Bradshaw and siblings Floyd Wayne Purdie and Beatrice Chapman.

After graduating from Georgie Tyler High School in June of 1959 she continued her education to become a Nursing Assistant. She worked at Isle of Wight Health Department and retired from Tandem Nursing home. At an early age, Yvonne joined Gilfield Baptist Church.

Yvonne was a smart, caring, and devoted nurse and truly loved to take care of the elderly and children. She was a mentor to many, sharing her knowledge and kind words of encouragement. Yvonne’s love for her grandchildren and great grandchildren was immeasurable. She enjoyed spending time with them and loved writing and making jewelry.

She leaves to cherish her memory a loving husband Walter Howard Gay of over thirty years; three loving and devoted grandchildren William Bradshaw, Jr, (Windsor, Virginia), Britney Lynn Bradshaw (Windsor, Virginia) Sheena Denise Babb (Donielle) (Franklin, Virginia); five great grandchildren; brother Rossie Davis (Renee) Maryland; two foster sons Torey Brown and Tomarko Charity; a special niece Yvette Weathers among nine nieces and four nephews and a host of other great nieces and nephews.

 Our hearts are heavy and her passing leaves a void that will never be filled. She left us beautiful memories that will be our guide. She will be missed by many.

On Sunday, October 15, 2023, a viewing will be held from 2-5pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 12pm on Monday, October 16, 2023, at Shiloh Baptist Church, 9000 Fire Tower Rd., Windsor.  Interment will occur immediately following the service at Gilfield Baptist Church Cemetery, 9040 Doles Rd., Ivor.  Please keep the Purdie-Gay family in your thoughts and prayers.
