On Friday, July 23, 2021, God in his infinite wisdom and power reached down from heaven to usher his servant Wilbert Eldridge Tynes, Sr. from earthly labor to heavenly reward. Wilbert or “Teddy”, as he was affectionately called by those who knew him, was born in Isle of Wight County on Sunday, July 27, 1947 to the late William Thomas and Perline Piker Tynes. Wilbert attended Westside High School and was drafted into the United States Navy on October 27, 1969. After 25 years of dedicated service to his country in both active duty and reserves, Wilbert retired on January 1, 1994. After retiring from service, Wilbert went on the work with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for over 15 years. On February 15, 1969, Wilbert married the love of his life, the late Sirley Thomas Tynes. To this union were born two wonderful children. Wilbert enjoyed many things including fishing, gardening and cooking at family functions with all white on. Above these he loved God and his church family as well. He was a servant indeed. As a lifelong member of the First Gravel Hill Baptist Church he developed a passion for mentoring and training young men to be doorkeepers in God’s house. In addition to leading the young male ushers, he was a member of the adult male ushers, security team, foodbank but took much pride in being able to serve his pastor faithfully. Wilbert looked forward to traveling with his church family whenever there was a trip planned to see a play or visit somewhere new. Wilbert was preceded in death by his mother and father; brothers Douglas Picott, William Tynes, James Tynes and Larry Tynes. Remaining to cherish his memories are his daughter Tina Davis (Carl) ; son Wilbert E. Tynes Jr.; grandchildren Amaura Tynes, Zaharie Tynes, Diamond McKinnon and Preston Davis; sisters Alice Tynes and Lavern Tynes; nieces, nephews, sister in laws, brother in laws, cousins, relatives and friends. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00am on Friday, July 30, 2021 at First Gravel Hill Baptist Church.
