Walter Uzzle, Sr.

April 19, 1930 — June 24, 2021

In the early morning hours on Thursday, June 24, 2021, Walter Uzzle, 91 was called by God to take his place beside him.

Walter as born April 19, 1930 to the late Otelia Berry and Isaac Uzzle. His life journey began as the 11th of 12 children. After his father passed away, he quickly became a man, helping his mother support his siblings by working on the farm. Walter became a husband at a young age which was challenging because whenever family members needed him, he was always there. Family meant everything to him. He was the pillar of the Uzzle Family.

Walter joined Ebenezer Church at an early age. When Ebenezer combined with Brown’s, Walter didn’t miss a beat and continued to serve on numerous committees and auxiliaries. He was a faithful man of God, a dedicated member of the Dara Owens Mass Choir. Walter continued to serve his church faithfully as a Trustee for many years and was awarded the honor of Trustee Emeritus. He was also a member of several quartet groups and an announcer for the former WKGM of Smithfield, VA. Walter was a patron of ASPARA Chapter#43 Order of Eastern Star, Bethel Lodge#7, AASR Scottish Rite Mason of the International Jurisdiction State of Virginia, where he held the title of Financial secretary until his health began to fail. After 45 years of service, he was grandfathered in as a lifetime member.

 Walter had several jobs on the family farm, owner and operator of Uzzle & Son Towing and Recycling Co. He was the first Black legitimate towing service in Isle of Wight County. He was also a part time bus driver for Isle of Wight County, but his passion was auto mechanics. His main job was working at Newport News Shipyard where he retired after 40 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Patricia Edwards, a son Walter Larry Uzzle, grandsons, Jamie and Jerome, a great granddaughter, Ajsia Edwards, a son in law Isaiah Powell, seven sisters, Rosetta, Lillian Mae, Geraldine, Odell, Laura Lee, Mable and Tessie, three brothers; Robert, Willie and McKinley. Walter leaves to cherish is memories, his wife of 68 years Clarice Uzzle, four daughters, Prophetess Deloise Lias, Martha (Steve) Edwards, Denise Harrell, and Yolanda Powell. three sons; Michael Uzzle, Wilbert Boyd and Wendell Edwrads;15 grandchildren, 33 greatgrandchildren, 12 great great grandchildren; one brother, Elton (Doris) Uzzle three sisters in law; Virginia Uzzle, Martha Whittaker and Mary Frances Everette and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. WOW, what a blessing! He will truly be missed.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11am Friday, July 2, 2021 inside the Mission Center of Main Street Baptist Church, 519 Main Street, Smithfield, VA 23430.
