A Life Lived in the Keys of F&G

faithful and grateful

Thomas William Spratley, “Baby Jug” began singing in the heavenly choir on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at his residence.

We honor and celebrate the life of Thomas William “Baby Jug” Spratley- a man whose journey was defined by love, dedication, strength, faithfulness and gratefulness. Thomas was born and raised in North Carolina, where he spent his early years under the guidance of his mother, Susie Marie Spratley. He attended P.W. Moore High School in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. It was there that he learned the values of love, compassion and faith- attributes that would carry him throughout his life.

At the tender age of 5, Thomas began to discover and nurture his love for music. He became an active member of the school chorus, sharing his voice and spirit with others and laying the foundation for a lifelong connection to music and ministry. Later Thomas’ mother and father were married, and he and his mother relocated to Smithfield to live with his father David Spratley.

Thomas attended Smithfield High School. During his time there, he began to shape his character and spirit that so many would come to know and admire. At SHS, Thomas also honed his vocal music skills even more so under the direction of the late James E. Carver, Jr, who was the choir director at that time. After graduating, he began working at Smithfield Packing Plant (BSC line) for more than 25 plus years, and where he later retired from. During the Christmas season, the plant would feature a musical singing group comprised of plant employees to entertain employees at lunchtime in the cafeteria. People would marvel at Tommy’s singing and his entertainment antics during those memorable performances. It was a treat each year as they shared the gift of holiday music. Having a love and respect for people, Thomas also became a Union representative, where he was able to help with defending his peers at Smithfield Packing.

While following his passion for music, he sang and traveled with “The Mighty Spiritual Wonders” of Smithfield, Virginia. After retiring he became lead tenor for the Mighty Pearly Gates featuring “Fat Boy.” Lastly he was able to assist the New Pearly Gates when he was able to, because of his taking care of his elderly parents. Through this work, Thomas not only shared his talent but also brought joy, faith and unity to countless communities’ families and friends in joyful and sorrowful times and special occasions. He was a devoted member of Main Street Baptist Church and its music ministry-the Adult choir and the men of music. He also served as a dedicated soloist for the 8 a.m. morning worship service.

Above all else, Thomas was a devoted son. His love for his mother and father was unwavering, and he made it his mission to care for them with dignity, patience, and compassion throughout his lives. He stood by them, supported them and poured into them the same love they had given him. Thomas’s commitment to his parents stands as a powerful testimony to his character- a true and lasting accomplishment that defines the legacy he leaves behind.

Thomas William Spratley, the son of the late David J and Susie M. Spratley, leaves behind to cherish his memory; his sisters Toshika Spratley Williams (Michael Williams); Lorna White, and Marshal C, Holloway; a god sister, Ashley T. Gwaltney; Nieces- Shykeala A. Younger, Tierra N. Holloway, Destiny Chavis, Shanika N. White; great niece- Mehari Spratley; nephews- Saavon K. Spratley, Zyreke N. Williams and Jajuan D. Scott; great nephew- Ezra K. Spratley; along with a chorus of family and friends. Two best friends that stuck with Tommy and helped tremendously during his time of need are Curtis Burrell and Eddie Morris. We thank them.

Thomas “Baby” Jug Spratley will be remembered for his kindness, his voice, his work ethic and most importantly his heart. He may be gone from our sight, but his spirit, his humility, his music and his love will remain with us always. In recounting his words, Thomas would always say… God has truly been good to me. And that, my dear brothers and sisters, is something we can all remember to say and sing about throughout our lives.
