Sylvia Denson Batten

On Tuesday, March 10, 2026, angels entered the residence on Courthouse Highway to retrieve a sweet flower from this earthly garden, Sylvia Denson Batten. With her loving family by her side, she peacefully entered eternal rest and was reunited with her husband, Dalton Batten, Sr., of whom she had been married to for 52 years. She was 80 years old and was the daughter of the late Sylvianous, Sr., and Bernice Edwards Denson. Beside her husband, she was preceded in death by her son; Dalton Batten, Jr, and several siblings.

Sylvia was a 1964 graduate of the Westside High School. Her work history included Avon, General Electric, Newport News Shipbuilding and she was a Personal Care Giver for a number of years.

She was a life long, dedicated member of Rising Star Baptist Church, where she served faithfully until her health prevented her from attending. Sylvia was a member of the Senior Choir, Missionaries, Sunday School, Christian Women, Pastor's Aid, Nursing Ministry, Hospitality, Trustee, Deaconess and recently was elevated to Deaconess Emeritus.

Her memory will forever by cherished by her three daughters, Kerry (Garry) McDowney, Kiauna "Pooh Bear" Batten and Quiena "KiKi" Alexander; seven grandchildren, LaShay (Keith) Trower, Donzell Roberts, Jr., Joshua "Josh" Batten, Kierington "Kitty" Perry,Cornelious Wright, Alexander Wright and Quiera Wright; six greatgrandchildren, Kennedy Trower, King Trower, Knox Trower, Brielle Roberts, Jahmere Roberts and Daniel Roberts: one sister, Catherine Lewis, three aunts, one sister-in-love, one-brother-in-love and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

On Friday, March 20, 2026, viewing will take place from 3-6 pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. At 11 am on Saturday, March 21, 2026, a Celebration of Life will also be held at Shivers Funeral Chapel. Please keep the Denson and Batten family in your thoughts and prayers.
