Semaj J. Batten

Semaj James Batten, born December 14, 2004, entered into eternal rest on  Friday February 20, 2026. Though his years were few, his life was full—full of joy, full of energy, and full of the simple pleasures that made him unmistakably Semaj.

A proud attendee of Warwick High School, Semaj was known for his love of basketball, his passion for video games, the New York Giants football team and his devotion to the foods that brought him comfort—especially mac and cheese and anything sweet. He lived with a lighthearted spirit, finding happiness in the everyday moments and sharing that joy with those around him.

Semaj was employed as a door dasher- his gregarious personality was well suited for that profession.

Among Semaj’s greatest blessings was his beloved son, Oceius Batten, whom he cherished deeply. Semaj’s love for his family was evident in the way he showed up, laughed, played, and cared.

Semaj leaves to celebrate his memory his son Oceius Batten; loving parents Shanika Batten and Lester Sloan, who nurtured and supported him throughout his life. He is also cherished by his three devoted sisters—Chy’anne Sloan, Kuzonia Batten, and Mi’annie Sloan—each of whom held a special place in his heart.

Semaj is further survived by his grandparents James Batten, Sabrina Batten, and Placidia Sloan, whose wisdom, love, and presence shaped his journey. Others who will miss him dearly are aunts, uncles, cousins and friends

Our beloved Semaj will forever remain in our hearts.

On Friday, February 27, 2026, viewing will take place from 3-6pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. At 12pm on Saturday, February 28, 2026, a Celebration of Life will also be held at the Chapel. Interment will follow the service at Ebenezer Cemetery, Windsor, VA. Please keep the Batten family in your thoughts and prayers.
