Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.” 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

Roxie Lee Davis Godwin, resident of the Carrollton vicinity of Isle of Wight County transitioned from this life on Sunday, January 8, 2023, at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia at the age of 88.

Roxie was born in Suffolk, VA on February 18, 1934, to the late Jefferson and Ruth Davis. She attended Suffolk Public Schools, and married Ernest Albert Godwin in 1951. Thru this marriage, they had 5 children, 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She loved her family and always encouraged them get an education, work hard and “save some pennies for a rainy day.” Roxie worked in the food service industry at West’s Market, Little’s Market and Smithfield Station. She was a great cook and her specialties included desserts such as homemade ice cream, apple crisp, sweet potato jacks and fruit cakes. She enjoyed her time worshiping God on Sunday mornings while singing and praising God in her own special way. She was known for being a sharp dresser which she accented with her signature hats. She enjoyed spending time with her family for all occasions. She also enjoyed traveling to the Caribbean islands, taking cruises as well visiting family across the country.

Roxie was preceded in death by her parents Jefferson and Ruth Davis; husband Ernest Albert Godwin, Sr., and children Patricia Moran and Ernest A. Godwin, Jr.; siblings Alton Jordan, Angela Davis, Arthur Davis, Elsie Hites, Jefferson Davis, Jr. and Ruth Strong.

Roxie will be sadly missed by her children: Anthony “Bobby” Godwin, Vincent Godwin (Lois) and Darryl Godwin (Kathleen); Grandchildren Keisha Jones, Leah Godwin, Myron Godwin, Ericka Godwin, Kyle Godwin, Darryl Godwin, Jr., Danielle Godwin and Allen Godwin; great grandchildren Maya Jones and Che Mullins. Roxie will also sadly missed by her siblings: Sisters Daisy Bynum, Francis Lowd, Carolyn Davis, Paula Johnson; Brothers William Henry Davis, Clinton Davis, Roosevelt Davis and Bernard Davis.

 A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11am Friday, January 13, 2023 at Sweet Haven Holy Church of God, Carrollton, VA. Viewing will take place Thursday, January 12, 2023 from 3-6pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. Please keep the Godwin family in your thoughts and prayers.
