Michael Anderson, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love and warmth.
Michael was born on March 17, 1957, in Surry County, VA, to the late John P. Anderson Sr, and the late Mariah Pierce-Anderson. He was one of eight siblings. At the age of 12, he was baptized at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, where he became a lifelong member and developed a deep and lasting love for the Lord
He is a graduate of Surry County High School's Class of1976. During high school, he discovered his passion for food service and worked his first job at the Surrey House. At 18, Michael began apprentice school and went on to become a skilled pipe-fitter, Over the course of about 44 years, he dedicated himself to his craft, working at Newport News Shipyard, Portsmouth Naval Base, and Norfolk Naval Base.
In August 1981, Michael married the love of his life, the late Paula Marie Washington Anderson. Together, they had two children, Marcus and Mareal, whom he lovingly called his "two gifts." After Paula's passing, Michael faithfully raised them as a single father, supported by a loving village,
A devoted man of faith, Michael prided himself on service to others and unto God. He served as a leader and active member in many ministries, including the Usher Board, Male Choir, Proud Fathers Ministry, Hospitality Crew, and Men's Fellowship Group just to name a few. He was known for sending out daily Bible verses, offering encouragement and inspiration to everyone who received them.
Michael's fun-loving spirit and warm personality made him everyone's favorite family member and friend. He was quick with compliments and brought joy wherever he went, He cherished time spent with family and loved traveling whenever the opportunity arose.
Michael is survived by his children and their spouses, Marcus Anderson (Tiffany) and Mareal Denis (Emmanuel); his siblings, John P. Anderson Jr., Judy Anderson, Patricia Coston (Chauncey), and Vanessa Winfield (Herbert), devoted sister-in-law, Doris Anderson; aunt Louise A, Bailey; his grandchildren, Ma'Laya Marie, Tamia, and Aniya; a very special friend Annette Bright and her daughter Kim; his beloved godchildren; and a host of specially loved nieces and nephews, friends, neighbors and coworkers who will forever cherish his memory.
On Friday, October 3, 2025, viewing will be held from 3-6pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. At 11am on Saturday, October 4, 2025, a Celebration of Life Service will be held at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, 5738 Colonial Trail East, Surry, VA 23883. Interment will follow the service in Mount Ray Cemetery, Mount Ray Drive, Surry, VA. 23883.
