Maria Edler

On Thursday, June 15, 2023, God in his infinite wisdom called home one of his faithful servants, Maria Edler. Maria was born on April 24, 1923, to the late Peter Louis and Louise Briggs Elder in Surry, County Virginia. At an early age Maria was baptized in Mount Nebo Baptist Church located in Surry. It was here she became a faithful and lifetime member. She later become Mother of the Church.

Maria was the seventh of Peter and Louise’s eight children.  She was proceeded in death by her parents and all her siblings; James Edler, Thomas Edler, Peter Louis Edler, Joseph Edler, Robert Edler, Odell Edler Pierce, and Ella Mae Edler. She was also proceeded in death by her son, Andrew Edler, nephews, Graffie Edler, Quincy Edler, Herbert Pierce, Jr., and Peter Timothy Pierce, Sr., nieces, Virginia Pierce, Dale Edler, Rosalyn Edler, Viola Winfield, Louise Rowe, and Jeannette Byrd.

Maria was a lifelong resident of Surry County where she lived to be 100 years old.  She was a devoted daughter, mother, grandmother, and friend.  After retirement, Maria attended the Surry County Senior Citizen’s program as a daily participant.  Some of her hobbies included cross-stitching needlework and singing in the Surry County Senior Citizen choir.

Maria leaves to cherish her memory a loving and devoted daughter, Edith Marie Foster; one daughter-in-law, Judy Meeks Edler;  four grandsons; Adrian Lamont Foster (Letitia), Aaron Jerome Foster (Jennifer), Melvin Edler Foster, all of Surry, Virginia, and Aaron Hughes Edler (Sarah) of Virginia Beach, Virginia;  five great-grandchildren: LaTiya Street, Myles Foster, Maxwell Foster, and Hazel Edler, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 12pm Thursday, June 22, 2023 at Mt . Nebo Baptist Church Surry,VA. Viewing will take place Wednesday, June 21, 2023 from 3-6pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel.  Please keep the Edler family in your thoughts and prayers.
