Lenora C. Stokes

August 13, 1921 — March 14, 2015

Lenora Alice Chapman Stokes transitioned from earth to glory on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at 9:45 am at Sentara Nursing Center in Portsmouth, VA. Her life's journey of 93-years began on August 13, 1921 in Isle of Wight County, VA. She was the third child and second daughter of six children born to the late Lonnie Chapman and the late Eudora Johnson Chapman. Lenora accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Sunday school at Chapel Grove Congregational Christian Church (now the United Church of Christ) and began her membership with Morning Star Baptist Church in Windsor, VA. She received her education in the Isle of Wight County public schools including the Isle of Wight Training School (later named Westside High School). She married William Vernon Stokes Sr. on January 18, 1941 and six children were born into that union. While Vernon and Lenora lived in the Shiloh Baptist Church community, they sang in the Shiloh Senior Choir. However, she was a dedicated member of Morning Star Baptist Church serving as the secretary for both the Senior Missionary Circle and the Deaconess Board for many years. Lenora was employed with Planters Peanuts in Suffolk, VA for several years. She was appreciated throughout the community and most known as a Stanley Hostess. She also worked with the Blair Company and later as an Avon Representative. The life she lived exemplified her testimony. Lenora was dedicated to her children and family. She willingly served her church, community and where ever she could. She always stood on God's word and never compromised His principles. Preceding her in death is: her husband, William Vernon Stokes, Sr., her second child, Alvin Lorenzo Stokes, her brother, Lloyd Chapman, and her sisters; Mary Magaline "Maggie" Brodie, Daisy Stokes and Malue Manley. She leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters - Brenda Stokes Cuffee, High Point, NC and Major Joyce Stokes Clark, USA Retired, Appomattox, VA - three sons, William Vernon Stokes, Jr. (Esther) North Plainfield, NJ, Sherman Wallace Stokes (Carmen), Camden, NJ and Jose Orlando Stokes (Della), Chesapeake, VA - her sister, Hazel Chapman Wilson, Ivor, VA - 2 sisters-in-law, Hannah Mills, Toms River, NJ and Margaret Gwaltney, Newark, NJ - 7 granddaughters, Cheri Stokes, North Plainfield, NJ, LaVern Stokes, Piscataway, NJ, Tesha Stokes, Bibbi Stokes, Kaneko Stokes, Camden, NJ, Lillie Allmond Harris (Steven), High Point, NC and Monie Ka Tai Stokes, Panama City, FL - 5 grandsons, William Vernon Stokes, III (Nicole), Allentown, PA, Vernon NKer "Kerry" Allmond (LaShea), Hermitage, TN, Jamison Orrin Stokes (Carly), Chesapeake, VA, Aizen William Stokes (Marangely) Pennsauken, NJ and Ethan Tohei Stokes, Camden, NJ - 17 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great - grandchildren and a multitude of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and a dear friend, Bernice Brown Hawks, Franklin, VA. The family thanks cousins: Missionary Margie Copeland, William W. Johnson and Glen W. Stokes for their kindness and support throughout the years. We would also like to express our heartfelt appreciation to our extended family, friends, neighbors and members of our church communities for their immediate attention to our needs during this time of bereavement. The Funeral Service will be held 1PM Thursday, March 19, 2015 at Morning Star Baptist Church, Windsor, Va. Viewing Wednesday,March 18,2015 at thechapelfrom 4-7pm with a wake service from 7-8PM.
