Joycelyn Austin

July 16, 1951 — March 7, 2021

Joycelyn V. "Jay Jay" Austin, 69, of Williamsburg, VA, received her wings on March 7, 2021 at Riverside Regional Medical Hospital. She was born in Isle of Wight County to Jacqueline V. Joyner and the late Thadeous Joyner Jr. on July 16, 1951.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Jackie R. Joyner and her nieces, Diera M. Bragg and Jenna J. Kirby. Joycelyn joined Shiloh Baptist Church at an early age and was an active member until she moved to Williamsburg where she then joined St. John Baptist Church as a watch member. Joycelyn attended Georgie Tyler High School in Windsor, VA.

She graduated in 1969, which was the last class to graduate before the school's name changed to Windsor Elementary. She later moved to Richmond, VA where she met soul - mate and best friend, her husband, Michael Austin Sr. To this union was born their son, Michael Austin Jr., a very talented, smart and successful chef of Miami, Florida. They later moved to Williamsburg, VA where Jay was employed at Heilig-Meyers, then York County Schools and later retired from Penske Williamsburg Transit. Jay loved to coupon. It made her happy, especially when she could get products for free. She always had a caring and giving heart. She would donate to her local churches; and her family would visit and leave with a car full of goodies. She loved to crochet as well. I can remember the first hat she crocheted. It was so big, it came down over her eyes and nose (smile). She continued crocheting until she perfected it.

More than anything, she loved the Lord, her family and her dog, Bear, who died four weeks prior to her passing. Jay could hold conversations for hours, but when it was time for her husband to come home, she would make sure she got you off that phone. That was the respect she had for him. She will truly be missed and was loved and cherished by everyone who knew her.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, Michael Austin Sr.; her son, Michael Austin Jr.; mother, Jacqueline V. Joyner of Windsor, VA; sisters, Stormetta Redman (Daren) of Virginia Beach, VA, Denise Teal (Jerry) of Suffolk, VA, Cynise Sorbello (Giovanni) of Portsmouth, VA; brothers, Thadeous "Eric" Joyner (Patricia) of Richmond, VA, Jerry V. Joyner (Peaches) of Windsor, VA; brothers-in-law, Larry Austin (Patricia) of Delaware, Melvin L. Wilson (Candace) of Wayne, PA, Darrell J. Austin Sr. (Lynette) of Richmond, VA; very special neighbors, "Thanks for loving and caring for Jay", Waddell and Manuela Butler; a few special cousins, Fernando Winnegan and Vanessa "Red" McDonald; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
