On Thursday morning, March 26, 2020, Trustee James R. Clarke, Sr. entered eternal rest and Peace at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk, VA. He was a loving and caring husband, father,grandfather,great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was affectionately known as Roger.He was born on May 28,1932 in Isle of Wight County to Walter L. and Emily E. Clarke. Roger joined Mount Sinai Baptist Church at an early age. He was a faithful member and served as a Trustee for many years until his health began to fail. He was overseer of the church cemetery Committee where he was responsible for grave digging and assisting families with the burial of their loved ones. He graduated from Isle of Wight Training School in 1951. After graduation he joined his father as a farmer. In January 1955 he entered the US army. Upon the completion of Active duty and Reserves obligation he continued to work diligently in the agriculture and livestock business. In January 1986 he accepted employment with the Isle of Wight County School System working until his retirement in June 1997. He performed his civic duty for many years by working at the voting precincts. On December 24, 1955, Roger married Ethel Gilchrist Clarke. Their marriage of 64 years was full of love . To this union two sons and one daughter were born James R. Clarke, Jr, Terry T. Clarke and Anita T. Glymph. He was a devoted family man who loved unconditionally. He was known to his grandchildren and great grandchildren s "Pop" and "Big Pop Pop" as they were the apples of his eyes.. Over the years he enjoyed hunting, fishing and working in his garden. he was an avid Redskins fan. Rogerwas preceded in death by his parents, six brothers Paul, Eddie,Joseph, Jeremiah, Thomas and Lenard and three sisters, Virginia, Annabelle and Erma. Rogerleaves to cherish his memory.his loving wife Ethel, two sons, James R. Clarke, Jr.(Jacqueline)Terry T, Clarke (Tiffany) and one daughter Anita D. Glymph (Derrick) ten grandchildren, Tapreia (Michael) Jamaela (Kima) Taliva, Terri, Tamara, Taylor, Casey Cameron, David and Tania and nine great grandchildren: Triston, Trinity, Isaiah, Kayden, Sebastian, Kaysen, Kirsten, Makayla and Ayse. He also leaves to cherish one sister Cleopatra Savedge, two sisters in law, Virene Howell and Delores Savedge, one brother in law, Calvin Gilchrist and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. There will be a viewing on Wednesday April 1, 2020 from 4-8pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. All other services will be private. Mr. Clarke is in the loving and professional care of Shivers Funeral Chapel.
