James Edward Roberts, Sr.
James Edward Roberts, (Jimmy) was born February 21, 1924 to Carrie and Reese Roberts in Knoxville , Tennessee and transitioned from this life, Sunday August 24, 2024, at his home in Teaneck, New Jersey.
He was the youngest of two brothers and one sister.
He was drafted into the navy during World War II and served for two years. He attended Wilberforce/ Central State College in Ohio becoming a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi. Central State is also where he met and married Mildred Arlethia Brown. They raised three children, Leah, James and Darryl in New York and Teaneck, New Jersey.
One of Jimmy’s passions was fishing, and he pursued this hobby throughout his life. He also enjoyed working with his hands, working on home improvement projects at his house and many houses in the neighborhood. He was devoted to his church, First Baptist Church of Englewood, New Jersey and was on the Usher board for many years. He displayed his culinary skills yearly at the Men’s usher board breakfast.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Reese and Harvey Roberts and his sister Evelyn Haysbert. He leaves behind his wife Mildred Arlethia, children Leah Roberts, James Roberts, Jr., (Dawnne), Darryl Roberts (Nadja, deceased), grandchildren Jordan Roberts and Darryl Roberts, Jr., and many other relatives and friends.
On Sunday, September 07, 2025, viewing will be held from 3-5pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. A Celebration of Life Graveside Service will be held 12pm on Monday, September 08, 2025, at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church Cemetery, Surry. Please keep the Roberts family in your prayers.
