Sergeant First Class (Ret) Herbert L. Green entered eternal rest on February 2, 2024. He passed away peacefully at home in Smithfield, Virginia surrounded by his loving family.
Herbert was born in Franklin, Louisiana. His family migrated to Alexandria, Louisiana where he graduated from Peabody High School in 1960. While attending Peabody High Herbert met the love of his life Betty, she 16 and he 17. Shortly after graduating High School, Herbert joined the Army. In 1961, he and Betty were united in holy matrimony at England Air Force Base Chapel, Alexandria, Louisiana. To this union three children were born.
Herbert proudly served his country in the Army for 24 years. He served a tour in Korea, three tours in Vietnam, and three tours in Europe as well as many other duty stations in the United States. He completed numerous military technical training schools and college courses to enhance his military career. He served as First Sargent of the largest Aviation Military Intelligence Company in Europe. Throughout his career he garnered numerous awards including Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal.
Upon retiring from the Army, Herbert immediately went to work for RCA for two years as a Senior Maintenance Analyst on Navy and Air Force programs before returning to the Government as a civil servant for 18 years. After graduating from the Army Logistics Management College and combining both his military leadership and technical acumen in the workforce, he was promoted to General Manager 13/Contracting Officer where he was responsible for the development of logistics and training requirements for all signal electronic devices being delivered to the US Forces. Finally, retiring from the Federal Government after a combine 44 years he settled in Smithfield, Virginia with his beloved wife, Betty.
Herbert spent his remaining years traveling with his wife, Betty visiting family and friends across the country. He enjoyed golfing with his buddies, fishing, and spending time with his great grandson, Aiden. Together they rode the ferry, went fishing, visited aquariums and amusement parks. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, Christian servant, mentor, and loyal friend. He lived and he loved life to the fullest. He gave unselfishly of his time and resources.
Herbert was a loyal and faithful servant who spent his life serving the Lord. He served as an active member of the Second Baptist Church, Long Branch, NJ. and sang in the Gospel Choir after retiring to Smithfield, Virginia, he became a member of Main Street Baptist Church. In his time at Main Street he served as the Sunday School Superintendent and President of 2nd Division Tidewater Sunday School Union.
Herbert was a 32 Degree Mason, serving in numerous positions from Treasurer, Junior Warden, to Worship Master of Stuttgart Military Lodge 581, Georgia Jurisdiction. He also served as Chaplain of Mount Pisgah Lodge 48, Asbury Park, NJ.
He was predeceased by both parents Hebert and Katie Green, brother Clyde Green, and stepsister Archie Hatton.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 62 years, Betty L. Green, three children: Herbert L. Green, Jr, Terrisiana Johnson (Peter), Yolanda Eddy; and five grandchildren: Tasia Garrett (Aaron), Terrance Green (Susan), Michael Eddy, Anastasia Green, and Sebastian Green, and five great grandchildren. He also leaves behind brothers; Jules Green (Osa), and Terald Green; and an aunt and uncle, Judy and Joe Henry, as well as a host of nieces and nephews and dear friends. He will be dearly missed by all.
The Graveside Service will be held Friday, June 21, 2024 promptly at 1:00 PM at Albert G. Horton, Jr, Memorial Veterans Cemetery. 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk, VA 23434.
