Gloria Montgomery

Gloria Allmond Montgomery transitioned from this life on Friday, September 6, 2024, at Riverside Regional Medical Center.

Gloria Mornette Allmond Montgomery was born April 2, 1951.

Gloria was baptized and joined Jones Grove Baptist Church, of Windsor, Virginia. She later joined Mt. Nebo Baptist Church after her marriage. Gloria attended Westside High School in Smithfield, Virginia. She was an outstanding basketball player for the girls’ basketball team, winning All-District Honors. She graduated in 1969.

She attended St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Virginia from 1969 through 1973. She pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc, and was an active member throughout her life. She graduated with a B. A. in Education.

 Following graduation, she married the love of her life, Howard Montgomery, and they remained married for 51 years. They had three children, Anthony, Andrew, and Alex. She began her lifelong mission to educate students at Cypress and Whaleyville Elementary Schools. After teaching at these schools, she began to teach at L. P. Jackson Middle School, in Surry, Virginia in the mid 1980’s. After taking a brief sabbatical from teaching, Gloria resumed her career at Westside Middle School. She then taught at Smithfield Middle School, where she would serve for nearly thirty years. She retired in 2016. She taught a variety a of subjects but enjoyed teaching history the most. She received numerous awards accolades, including Teacher of the Year for Isle of Wight County.

Gloria had a variety of interests. She loved jazz music. gardening and she had a fascination with crime novels and dramas. She also gave to numerous charities, including Relay For Life.

Gloria was preceded in death by her father, Robert M, Allmond and her mother Corine Edwards Allmond. Along with her husband, Gloria is survived by her three sons, Anthony (Sharnita), Andrew, and Alex (Briana); five grandchildren, Jordan, Autume, William, Ava and Alivia; her sister, Patricia (Dwight); her brother David; nieces and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

On Thursday, September 12, 2024, viewing will take place from 3-6pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. At 11am on Friday, September 13, 2024, a Celebration of Life will be held at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, 5738 Colonial Trail East, Surry, VA 23883. Interment will follow at the New Jones Grove Baptist Church, 15090 Woodland Drive, Windsor, VA 23487.  Please keep the Allmond-Montgomery family in your thoughts and prayers.
