Gladys M King

July 28, 1936 — May 19, 2022

Our loving Mother, sister niece, aunt cousin and friend has gone on before us. The Lord answered her prayers and now she rejoices in heaven with the angels above. Dear Father, may we be so blessed to meet her there someday. In the morning of May 19, 2022. God called Ms. Gladys Marie King home to his place of eternal rest at Portside Health and Rebab, Portsmouth, VA. Gladys was born July 28, 1936 in Newport news to the late George King and Elnora T. King Cornick (Arthur Cornick, Sr.) George and Elnora later moved to Smithfield, VA where they lovingly raised their children. Gladys was preceded in death by two sons in their early years of life and other close ones including six siblings; Lynwood Taliaferro, Vera T. Tynes, Vashti K. Langford, Miles King, Arthur Cornick, Jr., Robert James Cornick and nieces and nephews who she helped raise. At a young age, Gladys accepted our Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at Mount Tabor Church of God in Christ in Smithfield, VA. Gladys obtained her education from Isle of Wight Training School in Smithfield, VA. She was employed and worked for IT Gwaltney, Inc. of Smithfield, VA. Our mother had a passion for people. She loved to take care of others and turned no one in need from her door. She was a single parent who raised four children on her own. Her life was not easy but, she did what she had to do, there was nothing she wouldn’t do for her children (grandkids, nieces, nephews and cousins she helped to raise included) All of us knew we were loved by her. Mom was there through good and bad times for her family. When we were without electricity in the house, she made sure we had food to eat. There was nothing she could not cook from breakfast to dinner, dessert included. She made it exceptionally well. However her homemade rolls were unmatched, better than any restaurant ever. Those buttery delights were filled with love that melted in our mouths. She leaves to mourn her passing, but to reflect upon her life with fond memories her children; Eddie king of Portsmouth, VA, Sabrena (Willis) Simmons of Ozark, AL, Darrin King and Gregory King of Newport News, VA; four siblings; George (Anita ) King of West Point, New York, Elnora. Diggs of Smithfield, VA, McKinley Cornick of Portsmouth, VA, Lionel (Argerine) Cornick of Smithfield, VA; two sisters in law Mary Cornick and Vivian Cornick; 13 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; one aunt and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 12:00pm on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at Mt. Tabor Church of God In Christ, Smithfield, Va. Viewing will take place from 3-6pm on Friday, June 3, 2022 at the Chapel. Ms. King is in the loving and professional care of Shivers Funeral Chapel. Please keep the King and Taliaferro family in prayer. View Memorial Video
