George B. Clarke

In Memory George B. Clarke passed away suddenly September 17, 2020. George was born August 6, 1 922 to the late Richard Clarke Sr. and Allie Jane Newby Clarke. He was educated in the Isle of Wight Public School System. George retired from the Smithfield Packing Company after 38 years. Being a man that loved to work, he started working at Littles Supermarket where he was known for his infectious smile and quirkey jokes. George was loved by his family and friends and was affectionately known as "Georgie Porgie Puddin Pie, GG, and Uncle Butta Butt. He was spoiled by every nurse that worked for him in his later years. On July 6, 1985 he married the love of his life, Thelma Ashby Newby. George never had kids of his own but when he joined his life with Thelma's he instantly claimed her children as his very own and they loved and adored their Dad. Their union lasted 35 years. George was preceded in death by his sisters, Edith Wilson, Mary Lyttle, Annie Maude Holloway and Uteria Hardy and his brothers, Pernall Clarke and Michael Clarke. George is survived by his wife Thelma A. Clarke, two children, Haywood Newby Jr. (Michelle) and Tywanda Robinson (Donnell); four grandchildren, Alexis Mason, Ammonie King, NyJah Silver and Jaylen Silver; and two great grandchildren, Aniya and Adrianna. He also leaves to cherish his memories one brother, Richard Clarke, Jr. (Dorothy); three sisters, Violet Savedge, Alma Hill and Marvin Fisher (Decatur), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins-in-law and friends; and a very special caregiver, Patricia (Pat) Massenburg. A Graveside Celebration will be held 11am Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church Cemetery. Viewing will take place Tuesday, September 22, 2020 from 4-6pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. Mr. Clarke is in the loving and professional care of Shivers Funeral Chapel. Please keep the Clarke family in your prayers.
