Fleetwood M. Tyler

October 23, 1933 — April 7, 2022

Fleetwood Miles Tyler AKA “Bumboolee” passed away peacefully Thursday, April 7, 2022 at Bons Secours Maryview Hospital, Portsmouth, VA. He was born October 22, 1933 to the late Frank and Beatrice Wynn Tyler. Fleetwood attended Isle of Wight County Schools in Smithfield, VA. He retired after thirty plus years of dedicated service at Gwaltney Meat Packing Plant in Smithfield, VA. Fleetwood was a former member of Brown’s AME Church. He was devoted to his family and friends and provided for them. You could count on him to cook and fry the fresh fish from his catch at every family reunion. Fleetwood loved fishing as it was soothing and meditative. He was self-proclaimed to be the GOAT (Greatest fisherman Of All Time) in Smithfield, VA. Fleetwood was preceded in death by his wife Helen Marie Shears Tyler and his siblings Frank, George, Mattie, Jack, Elsie, Edna, Alvertus, Edward, John and Joe Tyler. He is dearly loved and missed by five step-children Angela Holt (Mark), Jerry Holmes (Julie), Alison Holmes (George), Jackie Scott (John) and Carlestra Grant and several surviving nieces, nephews, many cousins and friends. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11am Thursday, April 14, 2022 at Shivers Funeral Chapel. Viewing will take place Wednesday, April 13, 2022 from 4-6pm also at the Chapel.
