The Life of Evelyn R. Johnson

With heavy hearts and loving memories, we announce the passing of Evelyn R. Johnson who passed away peacefully at her home in Smithfield, Virginia on August 19, 2026.

Evelyn R. Johnson was born on March 23, 1961, in Suffolk, Virginia to the late Joseph and Edmonia Johnson. Evelyn was educated in the Isle of Wight County School System. Evelyn was a loving mother, sister, aunt, friend and so much more to so many people, family was everything to her. For many years, she worked as a housekeeper and caregiver where her clients became family. Evelyn, known for cracking jokes, loved her family and would give you the shirt off her back. She loved fishing, playing lottery, gardening and spending time with family and friends. Evelyn found joy in the little things.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents Joseph and Edmonia Johnson; her son Dontae Johnson, and her sister Minister Virginia Hall (Pernell).

She leaves to cherish her memory, her son Lewis Johnson; her daughters Crystle Johnson, Latasha Anderson, and Amiya Pittman; her grandchildren and great children; her sisters Margaret Young, Mary Johnson, Mary Thomas, Mary Brown (Jody) and Helen Johnson; her brothers Apostle Joseph Johnson (Patricia), James Johnson (Cassandra),  Reif Johnson and Clinton Claiborne; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her lifelong friends Shirley Edwards and Lolesia Bowser.

Evelyn’s life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and the love she gave will live on forever.

On Wednesday, August 26, 2026 viewing will take place from 3-6pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11am on Thursday, August 27, 2026 at the Chapel. Interment will follow in the Christian Home Baptist Church Cemetery. Please keep the Johnson family in your prayers.
