Estelle A. Whitehead, 76, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2014 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk VA.
Born October 8, 1938 to David H. Allmond and Ora G. Allmond she was the 8th of 9 children and a native of Isle of Wright County. She was baptized as a young girl and became a member of the Jones Grove Baptist Church. Estelle attended the Isle of wright County Training School and became one of their outstanding star basketball players, graduating in the Class of 1957.
Shortly after she married James L. Whitehead, Sr. from this union they were blessed with two children, Cynthia J. Whitehead and James L. Whitehead, Jr. She was a loving wife and nurturing mother, who became widowed early in life. Estelle loved sewing and making many of her own fabulous fashions. She enjoyed growing beautiful house plants and had a passion for cooking soul food for her family and friends during the holidays.
She was employed with Smithfield Packing Company for over 30 years until retiring.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Whitehead, Sr. her siblings: Herbert Allmond, Beatrice Holland, James Allmond, David R Allmond and Robert Allmond.
She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia J. Whitehead of Smithfield, VA; her son James L. Whitehead, Jr. (Victoria) of Hampton, VA one sister Elizabeth Pittman, of Windsor, VA and two brothers Ennis Allmond (Elsie) of Smithfield, VA and Charles Allmond (Addie) of Suffolk, VA. Two granddaughters, Shirley and Tori Jenne' and one grandson William (Precious); Two great grandsons Khalid and Andrew and one great granddaughter Autumn. Several nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 12pm Saturday October 25, 2014 at Shivers Funeral Chapel, Smithfield. Viewing Friday from 4-7 pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel.
