Ervin Nathaniel Clarke Sr. 68 of Smithfield,VA was called into eternal rest on early Saturday morning October 3, 2015 after a 13 year courageous battle with cancer. Ervin was a quiet but strong man who fought with diligence and in silence an illness that stop many in their tracks.

Ervin was born on July 10, 1947 in Isle of Wight County, the seventh and baby child of the late Harry Jeremiah Sr. and Josie Gwaltney Clarke. Ervin was raised in the church and was a member of the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Ivor, VA where he was a former member of the Usher's and Hospitality Ministries. He was educated in the Isle of Wight public school system, graduating in 1967 from Westside High School. He was drafted into the army and served for two and a half years. During those years he served as a military police and in Vietnam during the Vietnam Conflict. Ervin was married on January 11, 1969 to the former Phyllis Williams of Smithfield and to this union were born five children. Ervin realizing the need to provide for his family went to work at Gwaltney Plant for two years and then on to Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, now known as Northrop Grumman in 1971, working 31 years in the X18 Welding department as a supervisor. He retired in 2002 after all those years making sure his family was taken care of. Ervin leaves to cherish his memory his wife of almost 47 years Phyllis Williams Clarke. Four sons: Ervin Clarke Jr. (Sabrina), Troy Clarke Sr. (Sanesia), Brian Clarke Sr. (friend Katrina) and Tyrel Clarke; one daughter, NaKia Clarke. Sixteen grandchildren; Erica, Jarvis, DaQuan, Ervin III, Troy Jr., Crystal, Eboni, Shardae, Brian Jr., ShaQuea, Tatiyana, Ja'Vion, Ty'Nasia, Jaylin, Nysaiah, Ny'Asjia and three great grandchildren. Two brothers; Marshall Clarke and Frizelle Clarke (Sarah). One sister, Jacqueline Clarke Hill. Two brothers-in-law: James Gray and Robert Henry Williams. Two sisters-in-law: Ruth Ann Williams and Bessie Hamlin (Edward) and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. A Funeral Service will be held 12pm Thursday, October 08, 2015 at Shivers Funeral Chapel. Viewing Wed. Oct. 07, 2015 from 4-7pm at the Chapel. Interment will be held in the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Cemetery, Suffolk Va.

A Funeral Service will be held 12pm Thursday, October 08, 2015 at Shivers Funeral Chapel. Viewing Wed. Oct. 07, 2015 from 4-7pm at the Chapel. Interment will be held in the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Cemetery, Suffolk Va.
