Early Sunday morning, May 1, 2016, God called from earthly labor to heavenly reward our beloved Ernestine Batten. Ernestine was born July 25, 1944 in Isle of Wight County to the late Sallie Bailey and Earnest Batten. She was educated in the Isle of Wight school system and at a young age moved to Baltimore, Maryland. While in Maryland, she worked at John Hopkins Hospital. After retiring in 2007, Ernestine returned home to Smithfield. She was a lover of plants and the gift of her green thumb would be seen throughout her home. Ernestine reconnected with New Bethany Christian United Church of Christ once returning home and remained a member until death. She leaves to cherish her memory her biological son, Steve M. Lee and daughter-in-law, Pamela of Smithfield, VA.; grandson; Montique T. Warren of Brooklyn, NY.; one sister; Ruby Wiggins (Milton) of Smithfield, VA.; three brothers; Horace Batten, Calvin Batten (Germaine), of Smithfield, VA. and Ernest Lee Bailey of Windsor, VA. and a devoted nephew Thomas "Wayne" Batten of Smithfield, VA. Former caregiver; Michelle Price and friend Adrienne Carr, both of Smithfield, VA. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A Home Going service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2016 at Shivers Funeral Chapel, Smithfield by Pastor Douglas Jones. Family will gather by 10:30 a.m. Public viewing will be Friday from 4-7. Interment will be in the New Bethany United Church of Christ cemetery. Professional services entrusted to Shivers Funeral Chapel.

Burial Date May 7, 2016

A Home Going service will be held 11am Saturday May 7, 2016 at Shivers Funeral Chapel, Smithfield by Pastor Douglas Jones. Viewing will be held Friday May 6, 2016 from 4 - 7pm at the chapel. Interment will be in the New Bethany United Church of Christ Cemetery, Smithfield.
