Ernest Lee "Jake" Bailey

Ernest Lee “Jake” Bailey was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 12, 2023 at his residence in Windsor, VA. He was born on May 15, 1938, to the late Henderson Davis and Sallie Bailey Batten. Jake received his education in Isle of Wight County. He accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of New Bethany Christian Church.

His previous jobs were at Hog Island and Smithfield Packing. He retired from Newport News Shipyard after twenty-eight years of service. Jake’s hobbies were fishing and playing cards. He loved making people laugh. He also loved just being around people and having fun. He loved singing. He sung with the church choir and was in a quartet years ago. He was a trustee at Bethany Christian Church.

Jake met the love of his life Alice Rebecca Wellons, and they were united in Holy Matrimony. Through this marriage came two beautiful daughters Linda and Ursula.

Ernest was preceded in death by his wife Alice Bailey, sisters; Thelma Daye, Laura Batten, Ruby Wiggins, Ernestine Batten, Delma Edwards, and Louise Batten and brothers; James Garfield Bailey, Phillip Bailey, and Matthew Batten.

Ernest leaves to cherish his memory two daughters; Linda Green (Walter) and Ursula Sutton, brother Calvin Batten (Germaine), a brother in-law Milton Wiggins, a loving and special devoted friend Virginia Booker, four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one goddaughter, and a host of nieces and nephews and two close friends Tommy Goddett (Marie) and Sam Herrings (Marie). A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12pm on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at New Bethany United Church of Christ, Smithfield, VA. Viewing will take place from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Church. Please keep the Bailey Family in your prayers.
