Ellen B. Howell

Ellen Estella Howell, known as "Stella" to friends and family, passed away at her residence in Surry, Virginia, on April 22, 2020, at the age of 74 from a brief illness. Ellen was born in Forsyth, Georgia on August 10, 1945 to the late Seaborn and Pearlene Battle. She graduated with a diploma in 1964 from Hubbard High School in Forsyth. She later moved to New York with a family friend to explore better economic opportunities. During this time, she met James Howell, who was working at Bell Atlantic in New Jersey. On April 4, 1970, she joined hands with James in holy matrimony in New Jersey. They went on to have three children. Ellen worked 19 years at Virginia Power, before retiring in 1996. She formed many inseparable bonds and friendships with co-workers that resonated over the years. She was a devoted wife and loving mother who never fell short of expressing her love in countless ways to her family and friends. She always thought of others first, often donating and giving from the kindness of her heart. Ellen enjoyed traveling, crocheting, cross-stitching, sewing, watching old movies/westerns, and family time. She found tremendous joy in being a grandmother, which she enjoyed spending quality time with her grandchildren. Ellen was a member of Lebanon Baptist Church. Her unwavering faith in Christ was evident, through the way she lived her life. Ellen is survived by two daughters, Satara Chambers and Charetta Howell, one son, Jason Howell (Jeneisse Howell), three grandchildren Kaitlyn Chambers, Kendall Howell, and Keaton Howell, four brothers, David Battle, Ralph Battle (Bernice), Leonard Battle (Sherrye), Earl Battle, one sister Linda Williams, and a host on nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by her husband James, mother Pearlene Battle, father Seaborn Battle, and brother Donald Battle. A private ceremony to celebrate Ellen's life will be held at 4 pm, on Tuesday, April 28, at Shivers Funeral Home, with Reverend Douglas Adams officiating.
