Bernie Bowers

On Sunday, April 5, 2026, our beloved brother, uncle, and friend, Bernie-affectionally known as “Shorty” to those closest to him-passed away at Riverside Regional Medical Center the age of 79. True to his nature, he departed this life with laughter, humor, and a joyful spirit. Born October 8, 1946, to the late Charlie and Annie Mae Bowers, Bernie was a proud native of Isle of Wight County. He lived a full and meaningful life, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and cherished memories.

Bernie was a dedicated laborer at the Smithfield Packing Plant, as well as SPSA Waste Solutions in Portsmouth VA, where he worked faithfully until his retirement. In his later years, he became homebound and found purpose in helping his family and friends care for their homes. He took great pride in keeping things clean. Dirt hated to see him coming, and there was rarely a speck left behind.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charlie Junious Bowers Jr., Fenton Lee Bowers, and Curtis Bobby Bowers; and his sisters, Ruby Bowers Cary Rogers, Lillian Bowers, and Marie Bowers.

He leaves to cherish his memory two sisters-his twin sister and devoted caregiver, Bernice Bowers Gwaltney of Windsor VA and Sadie Mae Davis of Ivor VA; his two special nieces, also his caregivers, Laverne Gwaltney Wrenn (George) of Newport News VA and Bernice Bonita Gwaltney (Lonzia Cameron) of Portsmouth VA; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

On Friday, April 17, 2026, Viewing will take place from 3-6pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. At 2 pm on Saturday, April 18, 2026, a Celebration of Life will also be held at the Chapel.  Interment will be private. Please keep the Bowers family in your thoughts and prayers.
