July 26, 1952 — September 17, 2015

On September 17, 2015, as the last grain of sand flowed from the hour glass, it brought to a close the light of a loving and devoted husband, a caring and supportive father, grandfather, brother and friend Ashton Randolph Gatewood, Jr. at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia. Ashton was born on July 26, 1952 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia to the late Ashton Randolph Gatewood, Sr. and the late Susie Moton Gatewood. He was preceded in death by his three sons, Ashton D. Gatewood , Roderick Newby, and Shawn Newby. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Little Zion Church where he remained faithful until his departure. He received his education from Isle of Wight Public Schools and graduated from Smithfield High School in 1973. He attended Tidewater Community College and graduated with an Associate's Degree Business Management. He worked as a Auto Mechanic at Art's Auto Repair for more than 30 years. He was also employed at Smithfield Packing in the Maintenance Department until his retirement. Ashton was a very committed, caring individual who put all that he was and what we knew of him to be in everything he put his mind and heart to achieve. He was an active member of Elk's Lodge IBOEW#65 of Smithfield, Virginia, Greentop Hunt Club, and the eldest founding member of Mass Production Motorcycle Club where he also held various positions. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Shelley Gatewood; one daughter, LaTanya Clarke; one grandmother, Georgia Moton Shivers; two brothers, David (Deborah) Gatewood and Michael Gatewood; two sisters, Sandra Johnson and Monica (Kenneth) Clarke; one sister in law, Sheila Gatewood; eight grandchildren, Jaylen Carke, Melquan Price, Mica Price, Marquale Cato, Khya Jones, Mahogoney Mclaurin, Ashantee Jones, and JaShawn Newby; one great grandchild, Khyron Jones; one godchild, Melakhi Raboteau; a special brother, Druid Blount; two special daughters, Nicole Jones and Shenita Hill; a special nephew Anthony (Kiva) Gatewood; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11am Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2015 at Little Zion Baptist Church. Viewing will be held Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2015 at the funeral chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be held in Baptist Cemetery.

Burial Date September 23, 2015

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11am Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2015 at Little Zion Baptist Church. Viewing will be held Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2015 at the funeral chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church.
