Arnold Johnson

May 23, 1944 — November 30, 2020

On Monday, November 30, 2020, an angel was dispatched to the bedside of our beloved Arnold Johnson and led him aboard the train bound for glory. Born May 23, 1944, he was the son of the late Deacon Artis and Juliana Johnson. He was a Luther Porter Jackson High School graduate of the class of 1964. As a dedicated worker, he committed many years of service to the College of William and Mary and Surry County Public Schools. He retired from Surry County in 2005. He joined Mt. Nebo Baptist Church at an early age and remained a faithful member of the church. He was also an active member of the first and second senior choirs and the male chorus until his illness occurred. Arnold was a dedicated citizen of Surry County, a member of the African American Historical Society, and the Surry Democratic Party. He was also a frequent attendee and supporter of other civic organizations and affairs, including the Board of Supervisors, the Surry County School Board, and the NAACP. Arnold was a kind, friendly, and gentle-spirited man who always saw the positive in difficult situations, pointing out that things could always be worse. He was also a unique historian who could recall dates, names of people, and momentous occasions long forgotten by most people. He was a dedicated son who took very good care of his mother who lived to the age of 103. Although we have been unable to see Arnold face-to-face, Arnold communicated with his family and friends as he used his cell phone to stay connected with us all. He always wanted to stay abreast of what was happening as he would ask everyone he called if we had heard any news. We were often amazed that he was able to share with us current information of which we had not yet been made aware. He leaves to cherish his precious memory his special cousins Audrey Byrd (Louis), Geneva Beckett, Garland Langhorne, Linda Ellis (Jerry), Roy Langhorne (Lydia), Mildred Johnson, Claudette Eley, Ernest Langhorne ( Michelle), Faye Grandison, Susan Carter, Ora Smith; and a host of other relatives and friends. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and the community. A Drive in Celebration of Life will be held 10am Saturday, December 5, 2020 at Shivers Funeral Chapel. Viewing will take place from 4-6pm Friday, December 4, 2020 at Shivers Funeral Chapel. Mr. Johnson is in the loving and professional care of Shivers Funeral Chapel. Please keep the Johnson family in your thoughts and prayers.
