Anthony D. Godwin transitioned from this life on Friday, July 10, 2026 in Chesapeake, Va.
Obituary
Anthony Dewitt Godwin affectionately known as “Pal” to his family, “Tony” to his coworkers and “Mac” to his beloved grandchildren, lived a life marked with faith, love, hard work and generosity. Born on June 3, 1958, to the late William and Carrie Godwin. Anthony was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, family member and friend whose kindness left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
At an early age Anthony accepted Christ as his Savior at Union Baptist Missionary Church where he began a lifelong foundation of faith. He was educated in the Suffolk Public Schols and went on to dedicate many years of faithful service to Columbia Gas of Virginia, retiring after a respected career built on integrity, commitment and dependability.
Anthony married Lauranette Godwin and together they were blessed with two daughters who became the pride and joy of his life. He treasured his family and especially cherished the time spent creating lasting memories with his grandchildren who lovingly called him “Mac.”
Anthony never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand, He found joy in cooking-especially grilling for his family and friends-traveling, listening to music, dancing and bringing people together with his warm spirit and generous heart. His laughter, wisdom and genuine love for others will be remembered and treasured by all who were blessed to know him.
Anthony’s life was a testament to faith, compassion and service. His legacy of love, kindness and unwavering devotion will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
Anthoy was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Carrie Ethel Godwin; his father William Henry Godwin, Sr; and his brother William Henry Godwin, Jr.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories, his two loving daughters, Dr. LaQuisha Leath (Quinton) and Lisa Godwin Caro (Christian); and his four beloved grandchildren, Quinton, Bren, Ayden and Bryce; two sisters Collette Hunt and Stephanie Juez; one brother, William Davis (Beatrice); six sisters in law, Louise Diggs Bagner, Frances Pittman(Paul), Michelle Godwin, Joyce Buck, Lynette Ensley and Lisa Denson(Harold);two brothers in law, Charlie Ensley (Rita) and Walter Ensley (Shelia) and a host of nieces and nephews including Dietrich Jarvis, Riichard Godwin, Nartasha Hardy (Ryan) and Danielle Godwin, a very special cousin, Darwin Mills ; along with a host of many other cousins and friends.
Anthony was lovingly cared for by Lauranette Godwin, with whom he shared many years of marriage. They remained close throughout his life, sharing a bond of friendship, love, respect and unwavering support. His memory will forever be treasured by his family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by his kindness and presence.
On Thursday, July 16, 2026 viewing will take place from 4-6pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11am on Friday, July 17, 2026 at the chapel. Interment will follow in the Tynes Memorial Cemetery. Please keep the Godwin family in your prayers.
