Ann Otelica Denson Smallwood

April 3, 1958 — December 12, 2025

Ann Smallwood, born on April 3, 1958, passed away on December 12, 2025. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unforgettable presence.

Ann is survived by her devoted daughter and son-in- law, Chanda and Ji-Kimba Kearney; her sisters, Sylvia Batten and Catherine Lewis; and her cherished grandchildren, Amare’, Khailen, Nia’more, Miyon, Davier, Noelle, and Maliyah. She is also lovingly remembered by her many nieces—Kerry, Fiona, LeTisa, LaShanna, Kiauna, and Jennifer—and her nephews, Dereix, Rodney, Brian, Bryant, Anthony, and Jason, along with a host of great-nieces and great-nephews. Ann also leaves behind her “special friend,” Jesse, and a large extended family of cousins who held her close to heart.

Ann was smart, athletic, jovial, and sharp-witted—someone who lit up a room the moment she walked in. She was the unmistakable “party starter,” the kind of person whose laugh could be heard from a mile away and whose smile and warm conversation made everyone feel instantly at ease. Ann never met a stranger. She welcomed people openly, generously, and without pretense.

A gifted and enthusiastic cook, Ann showed her love through food, always cooking to her heart’s desire and feeding both body and soul. Her home and presence were places of comfort, joy, and connection.

Ann Smallwood will be remembered as a bright light in dark moments, a source of joy and energy, and a woman whose love for people was genuine and boundless. Her laughter, warmth, and spirit will live on in all who were fortunate enough to know her.

On Friday December 19, 2025 viewing will take place from 3-6pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel.  A Celebration of Life Service will be held 12pm on Saturday, December 20, 2025 at the chapel.  Please keep the Denson and Smallwood family in your prayers.
